DELNA for students
DELNA is a free check of your academic English language skills. Your results will not exclude you from courses you are already enrolled in and will not appear on your official academic record.
All first-year students do the 30-minute DELNA Screening
As a first-year student, you must do the DELNA Screening regardless of your language background, school results or entry qualifications.
The Screening is a computer-based assessment and consists of vocabulary and timed reading tasks. You do the Screening once only (not for each course).
Booking options
You can book into either of these types of sessions:
-
Group Session
Choose one that seems applicable to you (eg, ‘Business School—Screening’, ‘Education—Screening’). -
General Session
This is called ‘30-minute screening for first-year students who have not yet done a DELNA assessment’.
Your results
We will email you the Screening results and inform your course coordinators.
If your results show that your academic English needs improving, we will advise what steps to take. We may recommend that you take the DELNA Diagnosis.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities may be exempt from the DELNA assessments. Please contact Disability Services to check your eligibility for an exemption—they will contact us directly.

Read the DELNA Handbook for more information and examples of tasks. You should read this booklet before the assessment.
Your DELNA Screening results may show that you need to take the DELNA Diagnosis.
The DELNA Diagnosis is a thorough assessment of your English language skills.
The Diagnosis is done with pen and paper and consists of:
- a reading task (50 minutes)
- a listening task (30 minutes)
- a writing task (30 minutes).
These tasks have been trialled at the Universities of Melbourne and Auckland. Each task enables us to diagnose your present language skills and predict your performance in academic English.
Booking options
You can book into either of these types of sessions:
-
Group Session
Choose one that is applicable to your course of study (eg, ‘Business School—2-hour Diagnosis’, ‘Education—2-hour Diagnosis’). -
General Sessions
These are called ‘2-hour Diagnosis—General Sessions’.
Your results
Approximately one week after your assessment, you will receive an email from the DELNA Office.
- If your results show that your language proficiency is appropriate for university study, we will email them to you.
- If your results suggest that you need some form of language support, we will ask you to collect them in person from the DELNA Language Adviser so that you can discuss the most suitable type of support for you. We like to do this as soon as possible in your first semester, rather than wait until you are facing difficulties with assignments, group work or examinations.
If you do not receive an email within the above timeframe, please email the following information to delna@auckland.ac.nz:
- your name
- your Student ID
- the date and time of your assessment.
If faculties, departments or course coordinators require a whole class to do DELNA, the results will be sent to them so that they know what language support to put in place or recommend to you and your fellow students.
To make an appointment to talk about your results, please contact the DELNA Academic English Language Adviser:
