Language support for undergraduates


Here are some of The University of Auckland's language support systems for undergraduate students.

Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics (DALSL)

English as an additional language
If English is an additional language, you can take credit courses.

Stage One courses include:

  • ESOL 100 Forms in Academic English
  • ESOL 101 Academic English Writing
  • ESOL 102 Academic English Listening and Reading

If you demonstrate a higher level of proficiency, you may be able to enrol directly into the Stage Two courses, which include:

  • ESOL 200 Advanced Academic Spoken English
  • ESOL 201 Advanced Academic Written English
  • ESOL 202 Practical English Phonology

English-speaking background
ENGWRIT 101 is an excellent choice if you come from an English-speaking background.

  • ENGWRIT 101 - English Writing for Academic Purposes
    A course that can help improve your grades in any other course which requires written assignments.

Department of English

The Department of English offers a credit course for academic writing.

  • ENGLISH 121, ENGLISH 121G Reading/Writing/Text
    A course developing University-wide skills of reading, writing and analysis. It addresses the needs of students in both English and other disciplines where both writing and reading have an important role in learning. The course fosters personal writing skills and introduces writing as a subject of study in itself.

English Language Enrichment (ELE)

At ELE, you can:

  • Use English language resources (DVDs, CDs, digital recordings, magazines, newspapers and books).
  • Get advice about your English (whatever your subject area).
  • Participate in language learning groups.
  • Use our computer lab in any way that supports your English language development.

The Centre for Academic Development - Student Learning

The Centre for Academic Development — Student Learning helps you to develop effective academic learning and performance skills. It is for all students from first-year to doctoral level.

  • You can take courses and individual consultations on how to perform at your best at university.
  • You can learn about everything from conversation skills and essay writing to reading and thesis writing.

Programmes include the REAL Programme (Results for English as an Additional Language for students).

The Centre for Continuing Education

The Centre for Continuing Education offers non-credit ESOL courses for students at an upper-intermediate to advanced level.

Courses include:
